Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, a love song to God's word in 22 sections, one for each letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The writer says those who walk in God's law are blessed, and that a young person keeps their way pure by guarding it with God's word: "I have hidden Your word in my heart." God's words are sweeter than honey, and "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."

Section by Section
Section 1 of 5Blessed Are Those Who Walk in It
"Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the Law of the LORD" (119:1).
"Blessed are those who keep His testimonies and seek Him with all their heart" (119:2).
The writer wishes he were better at it. "Oh, that my ways were committed to keeping Your statutes!" (119:5).
"I will keep Your statutes; do not utterly forsake me" (119:8).
Section 2 of 5Hidden in My Heart
"How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to Your word" (119:9).
"I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You" (119:11).
Hiding God's word in your heart means knowing it so well that it's always with you.
"I will delight in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word" (119:16).
Section 3 of 5Teach Me
"Teach me, O LORD, the way of Your statutes, and I will keep them to the end" (119:33).
"Give me understanding that I may obey Your law, and follow it with all my heart" (119:34).
"Turn my eyes away from worthless things; revive me with Your word" (119:37).
Revive means bring back to life.
"How I long for Your precepts! Revive me in Your righteousness" (119:40).
Section 4 of 5A Lamp to My Feet
"Oh, how I love Your law! All day long it is my meditation" (119:97).
"How sweet are Your words to my taste", the writer says. They are "sweeter than honey in my mouth!" (119:103).
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (119:105).
An oil lamp lit only a few steps ahead. That was enough to walk safely.
"I am severely afflicted, O LORD; revive me through Your word" (119:107).
"Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart" (119:111).
Section 5 of 5Your Words Give Light
"Wonderful are Your testimonies; therefore I obey them" (119:129).
"The unfolding of Your words gives light; it informs the simple" (119:130).
The simple are ordinary people, not experts. God's word is for them.
"Order my steps in Your word; let no sin rule over me" (119:133).
"Make Your face shine upon Your servant" (119:135).

From Luther
Luther said Psalm 119 teaches three things: prayer, meditation on God's word, and the struggle that comes with faith. He called them the way to become a true theologian.
In Church
Many churches follow the Revised Common Lectionary. It sings sections of Psalm 119 on several Sundays, including the Sixth and Seventh Sundays after the Epiphany in Year A and Sundays in the fall.
We quote Luther for what he got right about grace. He also wrote terrible things about Jewish people. Read our note on that.
