  • About 2,000 years ago, when Jesus was twelve years old.

Before the Story

When Jesus was a baby, Mary and Joseph brought him to the temple. An old man named Simeon held him and praised God (2:28).

Then the family went home to Nazareth. Jesus grew strong and wise, and God's grace was on him (2:40).

Passover was a great yearly feast. Families traveled to Jerusalem to remember how God rescued his people from Egypt.

Here's what you know that most people don't: Jesus is God's Son. Mary and Joseph know he is special. They don't understand everything yet.

Plain Retelling

Scene 1 of 5The Trip to Jerusalem

Every year, Jesus's parents went to Jerusalem for the Passover feast.

When Jesus was twelve years old, they went up as usual.

Scene 2 of 5Missing

When the feast was over, the family started home. But the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents didn't know.

They thought he was somewhere in the big group traveling together. They walked a whole day. Then they looked for him among their relatives and friends.

He wasn't there. So they went back to Jerusalem to search for him.

Scene 3 of 5Three Days Later

After three days, they found him in the temple courts.

He was sitting with the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.

Everyone who heard him was amazed at how much he understood, and at his answers.

Scene 4 of 5"My Father's House"

When his parents saw him, they were astonished.

"Child, why have You done this to us?" his mother asked. "Your father and I have been anxiously searching for You" (2:48). Anxiously means with worry and fear.

"Why were you looking for Me?" Jesus asked. "Did you not know that I had to be in My Father's house?" (2:49).

Mary had said "your father," meaning Joseph. Jesus said "My Father," meaning God. The temple was his Father's house.

They didn't understand what he meant.

Scene 5 of 5Growing Up

Then Jesus went home to Nazareth with them. He obeyed them.

Mary treasured all these things in her heart. She kept thinking about them.

"And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man" (2:52). Stature means height. Jesus grew up like any boy, in mind and body.

What Does This Mean?

"Listening to them and asking them questions" (2:46)Jesus learned like a real boy. He listened and asked.
"Astounded at His understanding" (2:47)Even at twelve, Jesus understood God's word deeply.
"I had to be in My Father's house" (2:49)Jesus knew God was his Father in a special way.
"Was obedient to them" (2:51)Jesus honored his parents. He kept the commandment for us.

Back Then

Families traveled in big groups. People from the same town walked to Jerusalem together, often with relatives. Children could easily spend the day with cousins or friends in the group.

Teachers in the temple courts sat and discussed God's law. Students listened and asked questions.

Twelve was close to adulthood. At about thirteen, a Jewish boy began taking on the duties of keeping God's law as a grown man.

Literal Reader Alert

Did Jesus run away? Luke doesn't say Jesus ran away. He stayed behind, and his parents didn't know. Then he went home and obeyed them (2:51).

Were Mary and Joseph bad parents for losing him? No. In a big traveling group, they thought he was with relatives. When they found out, they searched hard. Any parent would be worried.

Did Jesus sin by worrying his parents? No. The Bible says Jesus was without sin (Hebrews 4:15). He knew he belonged in his Father's house. His parents didn't understand that yet.

If I'm ever lost or separated from my family, what should I do? Stay where you are, or find a safe grown-up, like a police officer, a store worker, or a parent with kids. Tell them your name and your family's phone number if you know it.

From Luther

In the Small Catechism, Luther explains the Fourth Commandment: "Honor your father and your mother." He teaches that we should not despise or anger our parents and others in authority, but honor, serve, obey, love, and respect them. Jesus did this perfectly.

In Church

Many churches follow the Revised Common Lectionary. It reads Luke 2:41-52 on the First Sunday of Christmas in Year C.

We quote Luther for what he got right about grace. He also wrote terrible things about Jewish people. Read our note on that.
