Psalm 116
Our plain-language guide next to the Bible text. Each row lines up one section with the verses it explains.
Section 1: I Love the LORDVerses 1 to 4
"I love the LORD, for He has heard my voice— my appeal for mercy." (116:1).
The psalm opens with love — not duty, not obligation. He heard, so I love Him.
"Because He has inclined His ear to me, I will call on Him as long as I live." (116:2).
The response is permanent: I will call on Him as long as I live. One answered prayer shapes a whole life.
"The ropes of death entangled me; the anguish of Sheol overcame me; I was confronted by trouble and sorrow." (116:3).
The danger was real. This is not ordinary trouble — it was the edge of death.
Then I called on the name of the LORD: "O LORD, deliver my soul!" (116:4).
The shortest prayer. And it was heard.
1I love the LORD, for He has heard my voice— my appeal for mercy. 2Because He has inclined His ear to me, I will call on Him as long as I live. 3The ropes of death entangled me; the anguish of Sheol overcame me; I was confronted by trouble and sorrow. 4Then I called on the name of the LORD: “O LORD, deliver my soul!”
Section 2: The LORD Delivered MeVerses 5 to 11
"The LORD is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion." (116:5).
The testimony leads to a statement of who God is. He saved the psalmist because of His character, not the psalmist's merit.
"The LORD preserves the simplehearted; I was helpless, and He saved me." (116:6).
The simplehearted — those without resources, without power, without sophistication. God's protection runs toward the vulnerable.
"Return to your rest, O my soul, for the LORD has been good to you." (116:7).
The psalmist speaks to their own soul. Rest — because the crisis is over and God was faithful.
"For You have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling" (116:8).
Three deliverances: death, tears, stumbling. Complete rescue.
"I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living" (116:9).
Alive. Still here. Walking before God. That is the gift.
I believed, therefore I said, "I am greatly afflicted." (116:10).
Paul quotes this verse in 2 Corinthians 4:13. Belief and affliction are not opposites.
5The LORD is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion. 6The LORD preserves the simplehearted; I was helpless, and He saved me. 7Return to your rest, O my soul, for the LORD has been good to you. 8For You have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling. 9I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living. 10I believed, therefore I said, “I am greatly afflicted.” 11In my alarm I said, “All men are liars!”
Section 3: What Shall I Render?Verses 12 to 19
"How can I repay the LORD for all His goodness to me?" (116:12).
The question is not rhetorical. He gives an answer.
"I will lift the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD." (116:13).
The cup of salvation — lifted as an offering. The same hand that was delivered now holds the cup up in gratitude.
"I will fulfill my vows to the LORD in the presence of all His people." (116:14).
Not in private. In the congregation. Testimony is communal.
"Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints" (116:15).
Even the death of those who love God does not happen carelessly before Him. Each death is seen. Each one matters.
"Truly, O LORD, I am Your servant; I am Your servant, the son of Your maidservant; You have broken my bonds." (116:16).
Servant — three times in one breath. The psalmist belongs to God, and God freed him.
"I will offer to You a sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on the name of the LORD." (116:17).
"I will fulfill my vows to the LORD in the presence of all His people, in the courts of the LORD's house, in your midst, O Jerusalem. Hallelujah!" (116:18–19).
The psalm ends in the temple courts, before the congregation, with praise. The private prayer that was heard becomes public testimony.
12How can I repay the LORD for all His goodness to me? 13I will lift the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD. 14I will fulfill my vows to the LORD in the presence of all His people. 15Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints. 16Truly, O LORD, I am Your servant; I am Your servant, the son of Your maidservant; You have broken my bonds. 17I will offer to You a sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on the name of the LORD. 18I will fulfill my vows to the LORD in the presence of all His people, 19in the courts of the LORD’s house, in your midst, O Jerusalem. Hallelujah!
