Psalm 121
Our plain-language guide next to the Bible text. Each row lines up one section with the verses it explains.
Section 1: Where Does My Help Come From?Verses 1 to 2
"I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come?" (121:1).
The hills may have been a threat on the ancient road — bandits, enemies, treacherous terrain. Or they may be the hills of Jerusalem, the destination. Either way: the question is asked.
"My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth" (121:2).
The answer: not from the hills themselves, but from the one who made them. The Creator, not the creation.
1A song of ascents. I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? 2My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.
Section 2: He Will Not Let Your Foot SlipVerses 3 to 4
"He will not allow your foot to slip; your Protector will not slumber." (121:3).
The voice shifts — now someone is speaking to the pilgrim. A reassurance.
"Behold, the Protector of Israel will neither slumber nor sleep." (121:4).
The great contrast with the gods of the nations: they sleep, they are absent, they need waking (1 Kings 18:27). The LORD does not.
3He will not allow your foot to slip; your Protector will not slumber. 4Behold, the Protector of Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
Section 3: He Watches Over YouVerses 5 to 8
"The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is the shade on your right hand." (121:5).
Keeper — the word used for a guard or a shepherd. At your right hand — the place of a defender.
"The sun will not strike you by day, nor the moon by night" (121:6).
Ancient dangers: heatstroke, the strange fears of the night. Neither will harm you.
"The LORD will guard you from all evil; He will preserve your soul." (121:7).
Broader now — not just the road, not just the sun, not just the night. All evil. And not just the body — the soul.
"The LORD will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore" (121:8).
The psalm began with a question. It ends with an answer that covers everything: every coming, every going, now and forever.
5The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is the shade on your right hand. 6The sun will not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. 7The LORD will guard you from all evil; He will preserve your soul. 8The LORD will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore.
