Psalm 91

Our plain-language guide next to the Bible text. Each row lines up one section with the verses it explains.

Section 1: He Who DwellsVerses 1 to 8

Section by Section

"He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty" (91:1).

Two names for God: Most High, Almighty. Two images of shelter: a roof, a shadow.

I will say to the LORD, "You are my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust." (91:2).

The psalm shifts to first person: the psalmist declaring what the dwelling place of God means for him.

"Surely He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler, and from the deadly plague" (91:3).

Now addressed to the reader. The snare is a trap; the fowler hunts birds. Hidden dangers, sudden traps — God delivers from these.

"He will cover you with His feathers; under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and rampart" (91:4).

God sheltering like a bird over her young — the image is tender before it is strong.

"You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at noon" (91:5–6).

Four kinds of danger, four times of day: night, day, darkness, noon. No hour is outside God's watch.

"Though a thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, no harm will come near you" (91:7).

Modern

1He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. 2I will say to the LORD, “You are my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” 3Surely He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler, and from the deadly plague. 4He will cover you with His feathers; under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and rampart. 5You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the calamity that destroys at noon. 7Though a thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, no harm will come near you. 8You will only see it with your eyes and witness the punishment of the wicked.

Section 2: No Harm Will BefallVerses 9 to 13

Section by Section

"Because you have made the LORD your refuge, the Most High your dwelling place, no evil will befall you, no plague will approach your tent" (91:9–10).

The condition and the promise: because you have made the LORD your refuge — then, no evil.

"For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways" (91:11).

"They will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone" (91:12).

Satan quotes this verse to Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4:6). Jesus refuses to test it.

"You will tread on the lion and cobra; you will trample the young lion and serpent" (91:13).

Modern

9Because you have made the LORD your dwelling— my refuge, the Most High— 10no evil will befall you, no plague will approach your tent. 11For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. 12They will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. 13You will tread on the lion and cobra; you will trample the young lion and serpent.

Section 3: God SpeaksVerses 14 to 16

Section by Section

"Because he loves Me, I will deliver him; because he knows My name, I will protect him" (91:14).

Now God's own voice speaks. The condition is love and knowledge — a relationship, not a formula.

"When he calls out to Me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him and honor him" (91:15).

Not: he will never be in trouble. But: I will be with him in trouble. The protection is presence, not absence of danger.

"With long life I will satisfy him and show him My salvation" (91:16).

The final word: satisfaction and salvation. Not mere survival — a full life shown God's own deliverance.

Modern

14“Because he loves Me, I will deliver him; because he knows My name, I will protect him. 15When he calls out to Me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him and honor him. 16With long life I will satisfy him and show him My salvation.”
