Psalm 126
Our plain-language guide next to the Bible text. Each row lines up one section with the verses it explains.
Section 1: We Were Like DreamersVerses 1 to 3
"When the LORD restored the captives of Zion, we were like dreamers." (126:1).
The restoration was so complete, so impossible-looking, that it felt like a dream. Not denial — astonishment.
Then our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with shouts of joy. Then it was said among the nations, "The LORD has done great things for them." (126:2).
The joy was visible. The nations noticed. What God did for Israel was publicly legible as God's doing.
"The LORD has done great things for us; we are filled with joy." (126:3).
Israel echoes what the nations said. Yes — He did great things for us.
1A song of ascents. When the LORD restored the captives of Zion, we were like dreamers. 2Then our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with shouts of joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.” 3The LORD has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.
Section 2: Restore Our Captives AgainVerses 4 to 6
"Restore our captives, O LORD, like streams in the Negev." (126:4).
The Negev is the southern desert. Its streambeds are dry — and then, after rain, they fill suddenly, dramatically, abundantly. Bring us back like that.
"Those who sow in tears will reap with shouts of joy." (126:5).
"He who goes out weeping, bearing a trail of seed, will surely return with shouts of joy, carrying sheaves of grain." (126:6).
The movement of the psalm: from past restoration to present tears to future harvest. The tears are real. The seed is real. The harvest is certain — not because it has happened yet, but because this is what God does.
4Restore our captives, O LORD, like streams in the Negev. 5Those who sow in tears will reap with shouts of joy. 6He who goes out weeping, bearing a trail of seed, will surely return with shouts of joy, carrying sheaves of grain.
